Two parents were together in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 12, 2020 with their young child in the mother’s vehicle. Initial evidence showed the mother’s vehicle entered an intersection at about 121 mph and crashed into a vehicle and a sign. The young child was killed as a result of the collision. The evidence was only sufficient enough to charge the mother with the death of their child as no video captured the last moments before the collision that would have shown the father driving recklessly while racing the mother. Recordings from National Traffic Video showed, as written by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “both vehicles recklessly traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour while attempting to overtake one another as they approach the intersection. The Hyundai overtakes the Mercedes-Benz and continues into the intersection. The extreme speeds and driving patterns exhibited by both drivers in the various videos are indicative of both vehicles participating in a speed contest for a minimum of 8/10ths of a mile on North Rampart Boulevard between Vegas Drive and West Lake Mead Boulevard. Royce Jones dies as a result of injuries he sustained in a collision. The main causative factor of the collision was the excessive speeds achieved during a speed contest between his parents.” The traffic video ultimately secured the additional arrest of the father and a guilty plea by both parents.
